Do this pasture routine every time you enter the horse in the pasture to follow your lead:
Go to the horse’s “home” – the pasture. Sit on the squat from afar and Share Space 2 min.
Go to the horse to GREET and ask him to accompany you loose or put on a halter.
If the horse says no and refuses you must respect his wishes. He has the right to decline. If this happens, you need to stop your leadership request and leave your horse’s space.
To bring out the horse’s instinct to follow your lead when declined, you need to leave his space and then return.
Ask the horse to move a few steps to trigger his herd instinct to follow.
When the horse moves a few steps away from being herded, stop your request and leave the horse.
Wait a moment and then approach the horse from the front gently so you don’t cause him to walk away from you. Take the time it takes to get permission to approach the horse.
If the horse ever walks away, always walk away from the horse too, always in the opposite direction. Then you don’t push the horse and it builds trust and the will that you can come to him.
At some point the horse will allow you to walk up to him. You can then put on the halter or lead the horse loose if you have a connection with the horse.
If it doesn´t work it´s because your approach needs more guiding or that you need to put more time into approach and retreat. Don´t disturb the bond and trust. It is like courting a potentional partner.
